After decades of entrusting their pets to excellent veterinary healthcare teams, the founders observed the daily struggles that staff endured, from long hours to being underpaid and undervalued. These industry challenges were causing fatigue and early burnout, leaving insufficient time to focus on clients, patients, and business operations. With the support of countless mentors, advisors, friends, and industry contacts, Rarebreed was founded in 2018 in Portland, Maine.

The organization continues to create a broad network of practices that value healthcare teams, provide compassionate care, and offer the innovation and tools necessary for growth and, most importantly, happiness. Rarebreed Veterinary Partners was co-founded in 2018 by Dan Espinal and Sean Miller in Portland, Maine. It was built around a simple but overlooked problem: the veterinary industry had long underserved the professionals working within it. Rarebreed set out to change that by building a network of practices that put their teams first.
North Haven Capital partnered with Rarebreed as the company was building out its network of independent veterinary practices along the Eastern Seaboard. Rarebreed grew to one of the fastest-growing private companies in the Northeast, with a network spanning general practices, urgent care, and specialty emergency hospitals from Maine to Florida.
